We usually assume that "Big Fish eat Little Fish" (Pieter Bruegel the Elder 1556)

Bruegel's drawing was perhaps not depicting marine food chains as much as human greed. In any event, although it's a great drawing, it does not describe the ecology of planktonic protists well since many small protists eat as large or larger than themselves.
